          Don Muthuswami
He will kill you with laughter till you cry for mercy!

Genre: Family / Drama   Recommended: General Audience   Released: 23 May 2008

Starring: Mithun Chakraborty, Hrishita Bhatt, Rohit Roy, Mohit Raina, Dolly Minhas, Soniya Kapoor, Upasna Singh, Ali Raza, Anusmriti, Shakti Kapoor, Rakesh Bedi
Directed by Ashim Samanta

Ashim Samanta, marks his directorial debut with the film Don Muthuswami. The movie is funny at times and Mithun Chakraborty carries the film on his shoulders with his experience and seasoned understanding.

Muthuswami (Mithun Chakraborty) comes to pay his last respects to his father who is on the deathbed. The father slaps Muthu and tells him that he has brought shame to the family by being a gangster and that he would die an unhappy man. The Don promises his father that he would give up his crooked ways and turn into a honest man, if that would keep him at peace. So begins the transformation from Don Muthuswami to Sir Muthuswami.

Muthu orders his henchmen to continue working for him as domestic help instead of being gangsters. He engages a Hindi teacher Jaikishan (Mohit Raina) to improve his language. The teaching process understandably leads to a lot of laughter. Also, it is now the time to find a groom for his daughter Sanjana (Hrishita Bhatt).

How does Muthu get back the loot from Preetam? Who is the father of Sanjana's baby? Who is Ranjana? How does Don Muthuswami handle the situation? The film is all about it.

Mithun Charaborthy is fantastic and delivers comedy with ease. Dilip Joshi & Rakesh Bedi combine well as tailors who give Muthuswami a new look. Rakesh Bedi does well so does the newcomer Vishal Kotian who impresses with his comic timing playing Shakti Kapoor's sidekick. The charming Rohit Roy puts in an impressive performance as the crook. Shakti Kapoor has nothing much to do. Hrishitaa Bhatt is the glamorous girl in this film, though a little uneasy in comic scenes.

Here, Muthu's manager Preetam (Rohit Roy) comes to Muthu to ask for his daughter's hand in marriage. Muthu says his daughter deserves a man who earns millions. Preetam has been, over the years, stealing money from the Don, in his bid to become a millionaire. Although another girl Ranjana (Anusmriti) loves Preetam and she, infact admits to Muthu about it. Muthu is somewhat relieved that Preetam is not his daughter's boyfriend.

Meanwhile, Muthu thinks that the best match for his daughter Sanjana would be his good friend Don Vardhan's son Pradhan. However Sanjana disapproves this, since she fallen in love with the hindi teacher Jaikishan, Sanjana tells her dad that she is pregnant to ward off his choice of the groom.

Ranjana loves Preetam. Preetam wants to get married to 'Muthu's daughter'. Muthu's actual daughter Sanjana loves Jaikishan, however Muthu has Pradhan in mind for her daughter's marriage. This makes things more complicated and there is comedy and drama all around.

Ashim Samanta's father Shakti Samanta, was a force to reckon with in the 70s and 80s. And now the debutante director takes over the reins. He does okay with this comedy film.
