One night at the Call Center

Hello, movie review

The film is based on the novel ‘One Night at the Call Center” by Chetan Bhagat. Hello is the story of 3 Men and 3 Women working at a call center – Connexions, their lives, their work and above all their relationships. The story is told to a protagonist rock star (Salman Khan) by an unknown woman (Katrina Kaif) who narrates this story to him:

The story of ‘Hello’ is a tale of a call center on a particular night. There are six characters:
We have Shyam (Sharman Joshi) who finds that his girlfriend Priyanka (Gul Panag) is dissatisfied with his job that she might drop him as desired by her mother (Bharti Achrekar) and get her married to a rich NRI. Esha (Isha Koppikar) is an aspiring model who is a focused carrier minded girl, and there is Varun aka Vroom (Sohail Khan) who loves her immensely.

The glamorous Radhika (Amrita Arora) lives at the mercy of her mother-in-law while her husband (Arbaaz Khan) is involved with another woman. The tough Military Uncle (Sharat Saxena) isn’t allowed to interact with his grandchild. As expected there is the big bad boss of this call center – Bakshi (Dalip Tahil).

The story itself takes place during one night and each character reveals his / her problems either about their love life, or any marital issues, other personal problems in general. They then ponder over the prospects of all of them losing their jobs since the centre belongs to an American based company and the manager of this centre is extremely keen on moving to the USA.

These six colleagues manning the call centers find that their world is on the verge of a collapse. At that moment, they get a call from God and his conversation with them especially regarding their boss – Bakshi, makes them sit up and take notice.

Hello does have some flashes of good humour, but this is not enough since it has a vague screenplay in which the six employees gang up against their America-loving boss and manage to retain their jobs by – spreading a “rumour” throughout the US. And all ends well.

Hello has a good setting, unfortunately with a weak script. Rather, the promos of this movie made it look a little more mysterious and exciting then it actually was.

Chetan Bhagat’s novel “One Night @ The Call Centre” is indeed worth reading from the point of views of both content and its characterization. Sadly the director Atul Agnihotri’s movie based on the novel falls far short in respects of story telling and even the depiction.
