Lottery, movie review

Lottery is a suspense thriller which has the televisions Indian Idol Abhijeet Sawant as Rohit Avasti, a 25 year old junior accountant working in a fashion magazine publishing house. Though it is said that life is beautiful, but it’s untrue for Rohit, who is feels that his life is dull and also being unhappy with his work. The only exciting part is that as he is in an ad agency, he gets to meet up with his dream girl, an attractive model Simran Kapoor (Manisha Kelkar), who is his obsession, his love, goal in life.

Rohit’s friend Kabir at several times unsuccessfully warns him that Simran only seems to be manipulating him for her personal gains.

Soha (Rucha Gujarathi) who is also Rohit’s neighbour is introduced to him. She is aware of Rohit’s one-sided unconditional love for Simran. Coming from a disturbed family background, she craves for a strong relationship with a caring man who can heal her deep wounds. Her heart beats faster whenever she is with Rohit and he now falls for her love and charm, unaware of the dark clouds hovering above them.

Things take a turn for Rohit from his unexciting routine, when he gets an SMS which promises him a lottery of Three Lakh Rupees if he is able to take up a challenge and succeeds in it.

The bet… An unknown pregnant lady is about to deliver a baby. If she delivers a baby girl Rohit stands to win Rupees 3 lakhs in cash and if in case she delivers a baby boy Rohit will get nothing.

Having nothing to lose, Rohit bets and wins the cash. Life is not only beautiful but also very grateful, thinks Rohit as love is smiling at him on one end and on the other the goddess of wealth.

Wondering who is playing this game with him, he is lured into the second bet. This time the stakes are higher and so is the risk. Rohit plunges in the second bet willingly and wins Rs. 7 lakhs.

Now the battle of love and greed starts in the film Lottery. The beautiful life that promised happiness and bliss is now spitting fire of disaster. Friends have become foes. The greed for money has overshadowed the brightness of love.

The final bet for One Crore Rupees turns ugly where Rohit is framed for a murder he hasn’t committed. Thus begins the fight for truth and the ensuing drama unfolds a story never told before.

Performances in Lottery: Abhijeet Sawant has the looks and a good screen presence; but lags behind in expressions and the emotional moments. He is good-looking and has the boy next door looks. Leading ladies Rucha Gujarati and Manisha Kelkar are fine in their efforts. The talented Mukesh Tiwari has less in his role, whereas Sanjay Narvekar is a talented actor.

At least in the beginning, Lottery keeps the audience engaged for about an hour with its unexpected unfolding of events. There onwards, it takes the usual bollywood track with romantic moments and a little bit of comedy here and there.

Lottery has an interesting storyline about fate and chance and the director just manages to get it right with its narration. Screenplay, music, songs and cinematography are just average.
