Koyelaanchal – Film Review

An upright officer confronts the powerful mafia in the coal belt

Koyelaanchal

A film based on the coal mafia of Rajapur in Uttaranchal, directed by Asshu Trikha. (Koyelaanchal – Film Review)

If coal is an important fuel of our Industrial development, Koyelaanchal (coal belt of India) brings to light the explosive story of the people who have kept our precious fuel station at ransom for centuries. Calling these people coal mafia would be an understatement.

The film depicts the trials and tribulations of the poor innocent people living in the remote village of Rajapur and the atrocities inflicted upon them by Saryubhan Singh played by Vinod Khanna and his gang spearheaded by Karua played by Vippinno.

Karua is completely dedicated to Saryubhan Singh who can not tolerate any rebellion against him. He brutally kills anyone who dare raises a voice against them.

SuryaBhan is the undisputed king of Rajapur and goes around doing his shady deals with the help of his goons. Now comes Nishit Kumar as district collector played by Sunil Shetty ,confronts Saryubhan and questions him. One rebellious leader is brutally murdered by Karua infront of Nishit, he is shocked but unfathomed.

In the meantime Nishit’s wife along with their little son comes to Rajapur to be with her husband and advises that he should bring the evildoer to justice. Saryubhan tells Karua to just scare Nishit enough so that he stops interrogating him.

Karua accidentally ends up hurting Nishit”s wife severely that lands her in the ICU and kidnaps their son by mistake. After this incident Karua is told by Saryubhan Singh to abscond but strictly warned that no harm should come to Nishit’s little son. What follows is the real drama – an IB chief enters who is Intimidated and slapped by Saryubhan Singh. Karua starts going through the transformation of heart because of the little boy.

There is this endearing character of a good hearted prostitute mother of a small baby played by Roopali (Roopali Krishnarao) who likes Karua n also helps him with Nishit’s boy. She also influences Karua to do the right thing.

Nishit with the help of the IB team arrests Saryubhan and keeps him in the prison. The Rebellious leader who everyone thought was killed by Karua is alive and starts demolishing Saryubhan’s empire.

Karua gets to know of Saryubhan’s arrest, comes out of his hiding, kills the rebellious leader and demands Suryabhan’s release in exchange for Nishit’s little son.

The climax of the movie is strikingly picturised. Nishit gets his son back and the evildoers vanish. Watch Koelyaanchal and see how….

Special mention to Vippino for portraying a ferocious violent character of Karvu so convincingly and his subsequent transformation, and Roopali Krishna Rao as Roopmati.

Vinod Khanna is superb as Saryubhan Singh. We would give 3 stars to this highly emotionally charged movie.
