A film about relationships which explores the issue of adultery

Mr Singh Mrs Mehta, movie review

Extramarital affairs are like accidents that you keep reading in the newspapers. You only get a jolt when it actually happens to you. A lot of people are of the opinion that just because they are married does not mean they are dead. A lot of people think that if you have a married woman you love, you are really safe…A lot of people think that having an affair with a married man is cool… A lot of people think a whole lot of things.. Mr Singh Mrs Mehta is for all of them.

Set in London, Mr Singh Mrs Mehta is a story of two people – Ashwin and Neera who find their spouses are having an affair. Drawn together by shame and anger, they find comfort in their growing friendship even as they resolve not to be like their unfaithful mates.

Prashant Narayanan is Mr Ashwin Mehta, Lucy Hasan is Mrs Sakhi Mehta and the other ‘officially wed’ couple is Naved Aslam as Mr Karan Singh and Aruna Shields (who debuted in Prince), is Mrs Neera Singh.

Mr. Singh (Naved Aslam) and Mrs. Mehta (Lucy Hassan) are having an extramarital affair without the slightest pang of guilt.

Ashwin is a talented painter still waiting for the world to discover him. His wife however has full faith that one day he will be a very rich and famous painter. While he is confident as a painter, in his personal life Ashwin is unable to stand up for himself and is being taken care off by his wife Sakhi who is a high flying executive.

Karan Singh (Naved Aslam) is a high flying advertising executive who believes that it is his prerogative to flirt. He is married to Neera (Aruna Shields), a small town girl. Karan Singh is a ladies man. He is pretty confident that his wife will not even get a whiff of his affairs.

Neera Singh is a young innocent, naive girl who has recently got married and is besotted by her husband. As she discovers he is cheating on her, her world is shattered and her journey of self-discovery begins.

Mrs Singh is obviously agonized upon discovering her husband’s infidelity. But she doesn’t confront him with the truth. On the other hand, Mr. Ashwin Mehta, is blissfully blasé about his wife sleeping around with another man. He knows if he confronts her, she will confess to the affair and he will not be able to live with it.

Things become interesting when Mrs. Singh and Mr. Mehta meet, as both of them are cheated by their partners. They come close and have quite a few intimate moments, also a time when Mrs Singh drops all inhibitions and poses for the painter Mr Mehta.

Mr Singh Mrs Mehta is a film about relationships and explores the issue of adultery. With time the institution of marriage has changed. In our society we still attach stigma to broken marriages/ separations/ divorces. The director has simply presented the characters as any other set of people like us caught in a situation. The characters are not shown as the custodian of virtues.

The director leaves an open end for the viewers to draw their own conclusions in Mr Singh Mrs Mehta. This story of adultery and extramarital affairs is only for those who are fond of art cinema and a have a lot of patience.
