Summer 2007 – movie review

City Doctors experience a rude awakening during their rural internship

Summer 2007 movie review

Summer 2007 is a hard-hitting film based on a pertinent issue; it has a touch of humanity and a noble story. It is the story of five medical students who experience a rude awakening of sorts when they visit a village in rural Maharashtra. The film opens with a peasant putting himself on fire – depicting the Vidarbha farmers’ mass suicide. Summer 2007 movie review…

In such a scenario, the five friends are faced with the tough option – to return to their comfortable lives or to do something for the villagers. But given the rural politics and the influence of those who are opposed to change, the going would certainly not be easy for the five.

Sikander Kher comes up with a restrained yet impressive performance as a man undergoing inner transformation. Gul Panag the under rated actor is brilliant, Yuvika is fresh and glamorous. Arjan Bawja and Alekh Sanghal play their parts well. Sachin Khedekar does well. Ashutosh Rana manages to impress yet again. The rest of the cast is good.

Rahul Sharma (Sikander Kher), Vishakha (Gul Panag), Qateel (Arjan Bajwa), Bagani (Alekh Sangal) and Priyanka (Yuvika Chowdhary) are indifferent to the world around them, and remain absorbed in their lives. They lived a fun-filled, carefree city life with ‘who cares’ attitude, are now forced to look within and do some serious soul searching when they see the appalling conditions in which the villagers live. It’s a bleak place with no medical facilities, where hapless and hopeless farmers commit suicide in the face of government’s apathy and moneylender’s greed.

The five students who have packed their bags, head to a village for their rural internship. For them, this is really a vacation. And then, reality strikes.

As soon as they reach the rural service centre, an entire family of farmers poison themselves. Rahul and his friends cannot believe what goes on in the villages. They try to escape to Goa, but instead, they’re dragged further and further into the farmers’ tragedies.

Except for a song picturised on Sikandar and Yuvika, there aren’t many songs in the film. But the music is pleasant and in sync with the film.

Summer 2007 is worth a watch for its hard hitting theme. It has a Rang De Basanti kind of theme and feel. The debutant director Suhain Tatari skillfully portrays the plight of villagers on one side and tries to treat the audience with developing romance between the two lead characters. Overall it is a bit slow in the second half and has nothing impressive in the climax.
