2016 belongs to Sports Based Films

2016 will see sports based films

In Bollywood, sports-based films have never had too many takers. Over the years, only a few such movies, like Awwal Number (1990), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992), Lagaan (2001) and Chak De! India (2007), have managed to hit the big screen.

But the last few years have witnessed a shift, with films like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (BMB; 2013) and Mary Kom (MK; 2014) hitting the bullseye.

In fact, 2016 will see a slew of sports-based stories on the big screen.

Salman Khan will be seen wrestling and trying out mixed martial arts in director Ali Abbas Zafar’s Sultan.

Aamir Khan will play ex-wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat in director Nitesh Tiwari’s Dangal, which is based on the struggles Phogat had to face to train his daughters in wrestling.

Also, cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s life will be brought to the silver screen by Sushant Singh Rajput, in director Neeraj Pandey’s biopic on the ODI Indian skipper.

On the other hand, R Madhavan stars in Saala Khadoos (SK), a sports drama revolving around boxing.

“Earlier, film-makers usually made movies that were considered safe, like love stories, action films, etc. Also, most of the sports-based films that were attempted in the earlier decades didn’t do well, so no one ventured into that territory for many years. Now is a good time as far as the variety in plots is concerned, because film-makers are trying different kinds of stories. I’m glad that more sports films are now being made in India,” says film-maker Rajkumar Hirani, who has produced SK. He adds, “Sports films are usually about the triumph of an underdog, and they make you feel good. Such movies are happy films.”

Also, in queue is the biopic on former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin, starring Emraan Hashmi in the lead. It is being directed by Anthony D’Souza. A film on shuttler Saina Nehwal is also in the pipeline; it will be directed by Amole Gupte. Biopics on personalities like wrestler Gama Pehalwan (to be directed by Parmeet Sethi), footballer Sibdas Bhaduri (to be helmed by Shoojit Sircar), Dhyan Chand (to be made by Karan Johar) and hockey player Sandeep Singh (to be made by Chitrangda Singh) are being planned too.

“Sports have always captured the imagination of our nation. With time, India has seen the emergence of more and more sports icons from different fields. It’s not just their achievements, but also their struggles, which make their journeys fascinating and inspiring,” says Tiwari.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh feels that the actors’ desire to do more challenging roles has also spurred this trend. “Despite being a sports-loving nation, unfortunately, we haven’t generously experimented with sports as a theme in our films. But now, actors want to experiment with fresher themes and sports provide a gripping backdrop. It’s great that some of the top names in Bollywood are part of such films,” he says.

On the other hand, exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi feels that the success of BMB and MK has “tilted the scales” in the favour of such movies. “Since we have been watching these sports or hearing about these many sports personalities since childhood, the sheer connect with such films is immediate and very strong,” he says.

Salman Khan keen to shoot song with old radio sets as props

Salman Khan radio set for O Teri

Salman Khan, who is presenting Atul Agnihotri’s upcoming next film, O Teri, starring Pulkit Samrat and Bilal Amrohi, recently shot a promotional song for the film.

Salman, who has been constantly connected with the making of the entire film from the beginning, came up with an idea for the special song that he was shooting.

The star Khan was very keen to shoot the song with old radio sets as props as they were just appropriate and matching the whole look on the sets.

So, the production team landed up buying all the old radio sets available in Chor Bazaar overnight.

The idea came just before shooting the song and so the production team managed to get everything arranged for the song in an overnight visit to the chor bazaar.

The sellers there were more than happy to help the production team with the radio sets when they got to know it was for Salman Khan’s shoot.

O Teri talks about two boys, Prantabh Pratap (PP) & Anand Ishvaram Devadutt Subramanium (AIDS, in short) who are ordinary journalists doing ordinary stories facing ordinary pressures of life when a quirky turn of events changes their lives.

The film is slated to release on 28th March 2014

When contacted Atul Agnihotri, he said, “Yes, it was Salman bhai’s idea and our team managed to get most of the old radio sets for the shoot.” He laughed and added, “Don’t know if there are any more left there.”

With both films being youth centric and launching fresh pairings, faces and talent, Akshay Kumar and Ashvini Yardi took the commendable decision to shift the release date of Fugly to the 13th June 2014, to avoid splitting the audience share.

Ashvini Yardi
says: “Akshay and I both share our individual friendship with Sajid and we took the joint decision to inform Sajid that we would shift our release date to 13th June 2014.

Both our films are youth oriented films and mark the launch of promising newcomers in our industry. It’s important to give both the films the chance they deserve and it wouldn’t be fair to divide the audience. Although the genres may be similar, their individual subject matters are very unique.”

Sajid, Ashvini and Akshay are longstanding friends and Akshay and Ashvini’s gesture to shift the release date of Fugly will only cement their friendship.

is a coming-of-age drama set in the by lanes of Delhi, and marks Akshay Kumar and Ashvini Yardi’s second Hindi venture after the Blockbuster success of OMG – Oh My God! Produced under Akshay Kumar and Asjvini Yardi’s production banner  Grazing Goat Pictures’ and directed by Kabir Sadanand, ‘Fugly’, is a story of four friends: Dev, Devi, Gaurav and Aditya and how this carefree bunch, at the threshold of their lives, get caught in a ‘Fugly’ incident, which sucks them slowly into the big bad world of corruption, politics and the real society in the capital. Salman mentors Daisy Shah, his lead heroine in ‘Jai Ho’

Daisy Shah is one of those few who doesn’t have a filmy background. And so, her mentor Salman feels the need to groom her.

Salman Khan has a long list of people that he has extended his helping hand to and has groomed to establish themselves in the film industry.

The most talked about of the list being Katrina Kaif. In the diva’s initial phases in the industry, she owes it all to the Khan for his support and advices.

Just like that, this time it is Daisy Shah, the leading lady of his upcoming film, Jai Ho who will be groomed by the star Khan.

Daisy Shah, who has shared screen space with Salman earlier as well but as a background dancer in his films will be sharing screen space with him yet again but this time as by starring opposite him.

Just like Katrina Kaif did not have a filmy family background, even Daisy Shah does not have a film background.

While Salman Khan has played an angel to a whole lot of people in the industry, the next person to get his hand is Daisy Shah.

Since she is new in the industry, Salman is explaining her about how things function in the industry, how she needs to start her interviews and deal with the media.

Daisy is a simple girl and Salman has asked her to keep her simplicity intact as that is her identity and that is what will take her a long way.

Ironically, as the trailer shows, the concept of the film is also majorly about helping people and Salman is the living example of this concept.

Spokesperson confirms the news and adds, “Daisy does not belong to a film background, so as Salman is launch her he is also going to help her groom in the industry. He has already started sharing tips with her as they will soon start film promotions.”

Daisy Shah – Salman’s leading lady in Jai Ho

It is not the first time that, Daisy Shah, who is the leading lady of Jai Ho, will be sharing screen space with Salman Khan.

Little do people know but Daisy Shah has worked with Salman Khan before in two of his films. Now the leading lady of Jai ho, had previously worked with Salman as a background dancer.

Daisy Shah was the background dancer for Katrina Kaif and Kareena Kapoor in their films when they starred opposite Salman Khan.

Back then, Daisy Shah had no idea she would get a chance to star opposite Salman himself.

The actress is very thrilled and humbled with the whole life changing experience.

Jai Ho is the first big film to release in the year 2014. It is slated to release on 24th January, which is a non holiday Friday and it is Salman’s release after a gap of about 1.5 years, which is his longest gap.
